Libyan minister visits London

LONDON, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdulrahman Shalgam is to meet Tuesday with Tony Blair during a "milestone" visit to Britain.

The Libyan official's two day visit, which began Monday, is the first such visit in more than 20 years, the BBC reported.

It follows Libya's announcement it was abandoning efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.

As well as being the first visit by a Libyan foreign minister for at least three decades, it is also the first contact at a high government level since Britain restored diplomatic relations in 1999.

Tuesday's talks in London follow last week's meeting in the capital between British, U.S., and Libyan officials.
