Bali blast suspect gets life in prison

JAKARTA, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- An Indonesian court Monday sentenced to life in prison a Muslim militant for his role in the October 2002 Bali blasts that killed more than 200 people.

The Denpasar District Court found Abdul Ghoni, 43, guilty of violating an anti-terrorism law that led to the twin blasts in Bali's Kuta nightclup district. Most of the 202 people killed were Western tourists, mainly from Australia.

"Abdul Ghoni is ... guilty of committing a premeditated act of terrorism," presiding Judge Made Sudiya said in the verdict.

Ghoni had acknowledged making explosives along with other suspects Ali Imron, Sarjio and Azahari.

The Bali court has previously sentenced three suspects -- Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Ali Ghufron -- to death for their role in the bombings. Some 30 others have been handed sentences ranging from 3 years to life imprisonment.

Indonesian police have blamed the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group for the blasts. More than 100 people have been arrested since the blasts, most of them JI members.
