Wanted: BBC chairman, no politicos please

LONDON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- The British government is advertising in three of the country's Sunday newspapers for a new chairman for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

BBC Chairman Gavyn Davies, Director General Greg Dyke and reporter Andrew Gilligan all resigned after an investigator determined Gilligan's story that the government had "sexed-up" its Iraq dossier was "unfounded."

The same official report criticized BBC management for failing to investigate whether Gilligan's report was accurate and fair.

The Sunday ads say applications must be in before the end of the month and a decision was expected by mid-April.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said an active politician would not be an appropriate candidate for the job, but she was reluctant to rule out those with past political affiliations, the BBC said.
