Chile looking for female leader?

SANTIAGO, Chile, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Chile's president may be warming to the idea of a woman replacing him when he leaves office, a first for the nation, local news sources reported Tuesday.

While Ricardo Lagos told reporters earlier this week it was still too early to begin speculating -- presidential elections are set for December 2005 -- sources close to the president are saying he has two female Cabinet members in mind as possible successors.

The Chilean newspaper La Tercera reported recently sources close to the president claim Lagos said, "My successor should be a woman."

Defense Minister Michelle Bachelet and Foreign Affairs Minister Soledad Alvear are reportedly his two possible candidates for his endorsement.

Term limits prevent Lagos from running again.
