Bush reminds United States it's at war

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. President George W. Bush used his State of the Union speech Tuesday to remind the United States it still was at war -- against terror.

Bush said even though there have not been any attacks on American soil since Sept. 11, 2001, to think the threat was gone was wrong. "That hope is understandable, comforting -- and false," he said.

He said that "terrorists continue to plot against America and the civilized world."

He urged Congress to renew the Patriot Act, which expires next year, which he said was an essential tool in the fight against terrorism.

"For years we have used similar provisions to catch embezzlers and drug traffickers," he said. "If these methods are good for hunting criminals, they are even more important for hunting terrorists."
