McAuliffe plans to bring party together

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe is planning a unity fundraiser after the conclusion of the bruising primary process.

McAuliffe said he wants all 10 of the Democrats who ran for the party's presidential nomination in 2004 to attend the dinner, presenting a united front against the GOP, the New York Times reported Monday. Former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have already agreed to attend.

The event is tentatively scheduled for March 25, following a two-day party conference during which the Democrats are expected to cut the ribbon on a new national headquarters building.

McAuliffe said he expected to raise millions for the party at the dinner, which will come prior to the Democrats' July nominating convention in Boston but at a time when the delegate count should indicate the eventual nominee.
