McGovern Throws Support to Wes Clark

KEENE, N.H., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Former Democratic U.S. presidential candidate George McGovern Sunday endorsed Wesley Clark for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Speaking in Keene, N.H., McGovern -- who went down to a record landslide defeat against President Richard Nixon in 1972 -- praised Clark as "the best Democrat. He's a true progressive. He's the Democrats' Democrat."

"There is only one man in the race who has a serious strategy to get us out of the war in Iraq," McGovern said. He also praised Clark's tax plan to help the middle class.

McGovern's action could neutralize any boost former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean gets from meeting with former President Jimmy Carter Sunday.

McGovern's backing could be a significant boost for Clark, as it will give him credibility with left wing anti-war activists in the party who have long trusted McGovern.
