Greens will gather in Midwest

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The Green Party announced it would hold its 2004 national convention June 23-28 in Milwaukee.

The Greens erupted onto the national scene in 2000 when its candidate, Ralph Nader, won more than 2 million votes, largely at the expense of Democratic Party candidate Al Gore.

Nader has not ruled out running as an independent in this year's November election but has told the Green Party he will not be there standard bearer in 2004. Five candidates have thrown their hats in the ring for the Green presidential primaries: David Cobb and Kent Mesplay of California, Paul Glover and Lorna Salzman of New York and Carol Miller of New Mexico

"We experienced rapid growth in the years following the 2000 campaign," said Green Party official Lynne Serpe. "... We're here to join Democrats and Republicans on the political stage and to replace them in public office."
