MADRID, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Spanish government officials have bought a 1,300-pound safe to guard the divorce papers of the journalist who is to marry Crown Prince Felipe.
The Telegraph reported Monday the intention is to spare the heir to the throne, his bride Letizia Ortiz and the royal family embarrassment before the wedding in Madrid in May.
The daily newspaper El Mundo reported senior officials "gifted" the doubly-fortified strongbox to a local court so that details of the failed first marriage of Ortiz, a television news reporter, are not leaked to the media.
The officials believe the money is well spent because the announcement of the royal engagement after the couple began a six-month courtship was followed by newspaper reports hinting at scurrilous details of the divorce. The reports came soon after newspapers published excerpts of one of her former husband's novels which allegedly contained details of their sex life.
Officials are worried the gentleman's agreement that has prevailed between King Juan Carlos and the Spanish media might not be extended to the crown prince.
