Three killed in roadside blast in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A U.S. soldier and two Iraqi children died after a homemade bomb exploded along a crowded roadside in Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

Five other soldiers were wounded in the Sunday morning attack, some seriously, CNN reported.

"This shows how indiscriminate and careless these former regime loyalists are," said Maj. Gen. Mark Hertling. "They don't care who they kill as long as they make a splash."

The improvised bomb was a series of artillery shells "daisy-chained" together and placed amid a crowd of Iraqis. The U.S. soldiers were in a vehicle on the road, the military said.

Sunday's attack comes one day after three separate strikes by insurgents in the holy city of Karbala in Iraq.

Those attacks killed four Bulgarian soldiers, two Thai army engineers and six civilians, and wounded dozens of troops and civilians, coalition authorities said.
