NEW YORK, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The deadline to file with the Sept. 11 victims fund is Monday and some 2,700 claims have been made by those affected by the attacks in the United States.
The Justice Department set the deadline for midnight Monday. The Washington Post reported that hundreds of the nearly 3,000 families who had relatives killed in the attacks and are eligible to file with the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund have yet to do so.
The newspaper said the average fund award to the families would be about $1.8 million.
An additional 3,000 people have asked the fund to determine a monetary award for physical injuries.
The families that don't file with the fund are expected to seek other legal avenues for compensation.
The fund stems from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States in which four jetliners were hijacked. Two of the aircraft were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York and a third smashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed in western Pennsylvania, apparently when passengers tried to retake control of the craft. Some 3,000 people died in the attacks.
