Queen Elizabeth II to undergo surgery

LONDON, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday Queen Elizabeth II will undergo a surgical procedure to have torn cartilage removed from her left knee.

Palace officials said the queen will be admitted Friday to London's King Edward VII hospital. The operation follows a similar one on her right knee last January.

The BBC said the queen is expected to leave hospital some time during the weekend and should be fully active again within a few weeks.

The palace said the 77-year-old queen will spend Christmas with her family at Sandringham as usual.

Most of the queen's commitments next week, including receiving credentials from two new ambassadors, will be postponed or cancelled.
