Last campaign day in S.F. mayor's race

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The final full day of campaigning kicked off in San Francisco Monday where the Green Party has its eye on capturing its first big-city mayor's office.

Voters cast their ballots Tuesday to decide the close runoff race between Democrat Gavin Newsom and the Greens' Matt Gonzalez. The two finished tops in the primary to replace outgoing Democrat and California political legend Willie Brown.

Despite his Democratic ties, Newsom has the endorsement of the city's business community, particularly for his intentions to tackle the long-running problem of panhandling by scores of homeless who inhabit the downtown area.

Newsom's relatively conservative views have mobilized the city's large left-leaning community behind Gonzalez.
