Burkina Faso, Cote d' Ivoire talk peace

BOBO DIOULASSO, Burkina Faso, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The president of the Ivory Coast returned home Wednesday from a quick trip to Burkina Faso for urgent peace talks with that country's president.

U.N. Integrated Regional International Networks reported Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo met with Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore to discuss strains in their countries' relations.

In recent months, Ivory Coast officials have accused Burkina Faso of backing rebel forces operating for the last 14 months in the north of the Ivory Coast.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, has denied the charge and responded by accusing the Ivory Coast of supporting a coup attempt.

Ivorian government officials said the two leaders met in Bobo Dioulasso, a large town in the south of Burkina Faso.

Relations between the two nations have traditionally been close, but they have become strained as a result of the Ivory Coast's civil war. Since that conflict started, nearly 350,000 Burkinabe immigrants have been driven back home or to other regional areas.
