WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Whether or not gays should be allowed to marry dominated talk on many of the national television public affairs shows Sunday.
A recent survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press shows 59 percent of Americans oppose gay marriage, Voice of America reported.
On ABC's "This Week," Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., criticized the Massachusetts' Supreme Court ruling that gay couples should be able to wed under the state constitution.
Musgrave said her proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as an institution between a man and a woman is needed to override the Massachusetts ruling.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., told "Fox News Sunday" he would support Musgrave's amendment. But he said he doubted the Senate would support it.
Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said people should not be frightened of gay unions because they do not threaten conventional marriages.
