WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- The Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization is expected to announce Friday a one-year suspension of North Korea's light-water reactor project.

Despite the expected announcement from the international consortium, the United States and its allies are trying to persuade Pyongyang to abandon all of its nuclear weapons programs.

Diplomatic effort to schedule a resumption of international talks on the issue began this week. The talks involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan. An initial meeting was held in Beijing in August and a second meeting may be scheduled for December.
