Amnesty asks for halt to Angola evictions

LUANDA, Angola, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Amnesty International pleaded Thursday for a halt to forced evictions in Angola, claiming more than 5,000 people have been forcibly moved from their homes.

The London-based organization said the evictions, which have occurred since 2001 in the capital, Luanda, were "arbitrary and carried out at police gun-point, without adequate prior notice or consultation".

The U.N. Integrated Regional Information Network said Amnesty's 46-page report discusses current Angolan law in light of international human rights standards on the right to adequate housing and the right not to be forcibly evicted.

The government claims Luanda's population has increased four-fold since independence in 1975 and now stands at 3.2 million, but the city's infrastructure cannot accommodate such a large number of people.
