Heir to Spanish throne proposes marriage

MADRID, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Spanish Crown Prince Felipe has reportedly asked his fiancee's parents for their daughter's hand in marriage.

The Spanish language news service EFE said the formality occurred during a Thursday ceremony, in which Felipe presented his future bride, Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, with a diamond and white gold engagement ring.

The parents of the 31-year-old TV news anchor and now future queen of Spain went to the Zarzuela Palace, the official residence of Spain's royal family, for the private ceremonies attended by King Juan Carlos.

Letizia Ortiz said during the traditional exchange of gifts, she gave the prince a "literary jewel"-- a first edition of a book by Mariano Larra, a 19th- century writer who is considered the founding father of Spanish journalism.

Palace sources told EFE a June wedding is being planned at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral.
