San Franciscans voting for new mayor

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- San Francisco voters headed for the polls Tuesday to select a new mayor in what is typically a high profile race in California.

Incumbent Willie Brown is barred by law from serving a third term, leaving the race open to a half-dozen well-known candidates, including three members of the county supervisors, a former police chief, the city treasurer and Angela Alioto, a former supervisor and a member of one of San Francisco's most prominent political families.

The winner inherits a politically powerful job that nevertheless remains complicated by the familiar problems of tight finances and the vexing homeless situation.

Tuesday's ballot also includes a whopping 14 proposals, including raising "the city's" minimum wage to $8.50 per hour, a wide ban on public panhandling and increasing the civilian oversight of thr police department.
