Spanish prince engaged to be married

MADRID, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Spain's royal family Saturday announced the engagement of heir Prince Felipe to a television journalist.

The prince, 35, was described by the German press on a visit earlier this year as "Europe's most attractive bachelor," the BBC said.

His love life has been the subject of keen speculation in Spain for several years.

That all appears to be ending, however, with the announcement he will marry Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, 31, early next summer at the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.

The only son of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, will formally seek his parents' consent on Thursday, the palace announced.

Felipe has been heir since his father was crowned king in 1975 during the transition from the Franco dictatorship to the modern Spanish democracy.

His parents reportedly approve of the match.
