Palestinian meets with Syrians in Qatar

DOHA, Qatar, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A Israeli Arab politician met with Syria's president and foreign minister in Qatar Friday, angering Israel, still at war with Syria, the Jerusalem Post said.

Azmi Bishara met with President Bashar Al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa in Qatar, which is not on Israel's list of enemies, Ynet also reported.

The three discussed the situation in the Middle East and U.S. pressure on Syria regarding its support of terrorist groups and its occupation of Lebanon, according to the report.

The United States has asked Syria to close the Damascus offices of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Recently, Israel bombed an Islamic Jihad terrorist training base in Syrian territory.

Under Israeli law, citizens are not allowed to travel to enemy states. Balad faction head Jamal Zachalka told Ynet Bishara's meeting was entirely legal, since it took place in Qatar, a nation not officially included on Israel's list of enemies.

Zachalka said Arab-Israeli politicians would continue meeting with the leaders of the Arab world to "help the peace process."
