Philip-to-Diana letters cause furor

LONDON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The royal family is reported very upset over leaks of letters by Prince Philip to his daughter-in-law, Princess Diana, over her marital breakup.

Contents of the letters were included in a forthcoming book by former butler Paul Burrell and extracts have been picked by London newspapers. Philip was reported to be "furious" as the queen's legal advisors held crisis meetings, the London Telegraph said.

In the book, Philip condemned the affair between his son, Prince Charles, and Camilla Parker Bowles, but blamed Diana for driving him into her arms. A letter in 1992 quoted Philip as telling Diana, "I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla."

Another letter makes clear the marriage rift had seriously shaken both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth.

"We do not approve of either of you having lovers. Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position," Prince Philip wrote.
