LONDON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Leaders from the worldwide Anglican Communion are gathered in London for a two-day summit on the issue of gay clergy.
The summit was called by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams in response to the election of divorced father of two, Gene Robinson, an openly gay man who has a long-term partner, as Bishop of New Hampshire in the United States.
Other topics for discussion will include the authorization of a rite for same sex blessings in a British Columbia, Canada, diocese, and the uproar in Britain earlier this year over the nomination of Canon Jeffrey John, who is openly gay, as Bishop of Reading, the London Telegraph said Wednesday.
The Most Reverend Walter Makhulu, a senior African cleric described the exclusion of gays as a "heresy" comparable with apartheid. He was preaching at a service run by Inclusive Church, a pro-gay group.
