WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The results of Tuesday's recall election in California may spur Congress to enact comprehensive reform of the nation's immigration laws.
Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who represents communities around Phoenix, says the results improve the outlook for "serious and comprehensive immigration reform."
Flake is one of the principal sponsors of H.R. 2899, the Border Security and Immigration Improvement Act, which would create a comprehensive federal temporary worker program.
California Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Flake's legislation during the recall campaign.
"For a state like California, which is burdened by all the problems caused by our current immigration policies, to elect a leader who is serious about working with the federal government," Flake said, "clearly builds more momentum for immigration reform."
