Ugandan president under fire for spending

KAMPALA, Uganda, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Uganda's president Sunday defended flying his daughter to Europe on his presidential jet, saying she would not be safe in her own country.

President Yoweri Museveni issued a lengthy statement in the Sunday papers admitting he flew his daughter and daughter-in-law to Europe to deliver their children, the BBC reported.

Ugandan leader rebuffed claims that the recent trip cost $90,000 and instead put the price around $27,000.

Museveni said there had been enemy plots to kill him and doctors in Uganda he considered hostile, and therefore, they could not be trusted to treat his family.

Critics and media have blasted Museveni for the extravagance and one paper went so far to list essential items that could have been purchased with the cost of the trip, the BBC said.

Among the items were mammogram machines to detect breast cancer or tens of thousands of mosquito nets to combat malaria.
