Huffington steps out of Calif. recall race

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Arianna Huffington pulled the plug on her California gubernatorial campaign Tuesday, saying she didn't want to risk a GOP victory by staying in the race.

The columnist turned independent politician made her withdrawl official during an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live."

She told King that she would devote her efforts to turning back the recall vote against Gov. Gray Davis. She said keeping Davis was preferable to electing Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Huffington has been blunt in her criticism of front-running candidates Schwarzenegger and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante; however she remained in the single digits in recent polls.

Davis was in Los Angeles Tuesday to sign a package of bills reforming the state's workman's compensation system. The measures are expected to cut costs by more than $2 billion and provide rapid rate relief for the state's business community.
