Calif. recall race enters final full week

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- California's recall race entered its final full week Monday with a new poll showing Arnold Schwarzenegger may be the candidate to beat.

The CNN-USA Today survey found Schwarzenegger favored by 40 percent of the 787 respondents, well ahead of Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante's 25 percent and Republican Tom McClintock's 18 percent.

In addition, a whopping 63 percent favored replacing Gov. Gray Davis, which would open the door for Schwarzenegger.

The poll was the first since last week's debate that featured Schwarzenegger for his first and only debate performance.

Schwarzenegger was scheduled for one of his carefully staged "Ask Arnold" town hall meetings near Fresno Monday while Davis planned to take part in a similar forum in Los Angeles Monday night.

Arianna Huffington remains well off the pace in the CNN poll but carries on Monday in San Francisco by unveiling a new alternative energy platform.
