Hurricane Juan barrels to Nova Scotia

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Hurricane Juan intensified to a category 2 storm Saturday as it barreled toward Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Canadian Hurricane Center estimated Juan would hit land around dinner time Sunday, CBC News reported.

Juan had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph Saturday evening, but the storm was expected to lose strength as it passed over the colder waters of the north Atlantic, forecasters said.

No evacuations were ordered, but residents were told to batten the hatches in anticipation of high winds and heavy rains.

Nova Scotia's last hurricane, Gustav, caused little damage last year.

Juan is the fifth hurricane of the Atlantic season and the 10th storm system to be named. It started brewing late Thursday afternoon and forced the cancellation of flights in and out of Bermuda Friday.
