Tourist escapes Columbian kidnappers

LONDON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Columbian Army officials say a British tourist escaped his Columbian kidnappers Wednesday, after two weeks in the jungle.

Army commander Gen. Carlos Ospina told Colombian local radio that London-born Matthew Scott was found by Indians in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and was taken to Army authorities.

According to the BBC, the British Foreign Office confirmed Scott had escaped his captors.

The BBC said there was no word on the other kidnapped hikers -- another Briton, four Israelis, a Spaniard and a German -- who were also taken hostage on Sept.12.

Earlier Wednesday, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe blamed the Cuban-inspired National Liberation Army for the kidnappings.

Ospina said Scott's information will allow the military to "readjust" the search for the other kidnap victims.

The BBC said more than 1,000 people have been kidnapped in Colombia since the beginning of the year.
