SEOUL, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- At least 117 people were either missing or dead Monday in the wake of Typhoon Maemi, which struck South Korea during the weekend.
The Korea Times said the storm, which struck during a national holiday period, caused about $1.16 billion in property damage. A total of 91 people were confirmed dead and 26 missing after the most powerful typhoon to ever hit the country flattened hundreds of buildings.

Officials at South Korea's National Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters told the newspaper nearly 9,000 people lost their homes during the storm, which damaged 873 roads, 30 bridges, wrecked 489 vessels and destroyed about 37,500 acres of farmland.
