GOP's Ueberroth to leave Calif. gov race

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Peter Ueberroth was expected to drop out of the California governor's race Tuesday after failing to gain traction behind GOP leader Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Republican former baseball commissioner and Olympic organizer began airing television ads Monday, however, Los Angeles television station KABC said Tuesday Ueberroth was too far down in the polls to continue.

Ueberroth's departure would leave conservative State Sen. Tom McClintock as the leading Republican challenger to Schwarzenegger.

A poll released Monday showed Schwarzenegger trailing Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante by 5 percentage points. Gov. Gray Davis is still trailing in the recall question with 55 percent of voters saying they would vote to remove the Democratic governor from office.

Bustamante was in Los Angeles Tuesday and suggested during a candidates' forum a successful governor needed to reach out to all voters rather than just the mainstream.
