Ugandan to face firing squad

KAMPALA, Uganda, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A Ugandan court martial has sentenced a soldier to death after finding him guilty of cowardice, Johannesburg's The Star reported Monday.

Army spokesperson Maj. Shaban Bantariza said "Corporal Pimundu Gimaro was found guilty by a field court martial and will die by firing squad after the president (Yoweri Museveni) consents to the sentence."

Gimaro allegedly committed the offense last month when he failed to respond to a report by a civilian that Lord's Resistance Army rebels had attacked a village near his camp.

His failure to act on the information is said to have made it possible for the rebels to kill eight civilians when they attacked the village.

"This court is final. There is no appeal. You have been sentenced to death," Col. Andrew Guti, who presided over the court-martial, was quoted by the state-owned Sunday Vision as telling the accused.
