U.N. calls Geneva high-level Iraq talks

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Monday called a meeting on Iraq for foreign ministers from the five permanent members of the Security Council.

The session with ministers of Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States is slated for Geneva on Saturday. A spokesman said the meeting would discuss the situation in Iraq and in the council, referring to a U.S.-drafted resolution in the works.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Negroponte said Secretary of State Colin Powell "intends to participate."

Conclave plans were announced as Annan called ambassadors from the same five nations to a late afternoon meeting on Iraq.

Following that session Negroponte said the United States has had with its council colleagues "some very constructive and good discussions, but with a P5 (permanent five) meeting on the horizon I don't want to pre-empt those (Geneva) discussions."

He added, "We put a lot of work into that resolution. We think it captures a lot of the ideas that have been given to us by other countries." Said Washington's envoy, "specific language" is now being sought.
