U.S. considers U.N. command in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Bush administration says it might allow a multinational force in Iraq sponsored by the United Nations if a U.S. commander is in charge.

Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said the proposal is only "one idea being explored" in discussions at the U.N.

But the New York Times said Armitage's remarks signal a shift in policy for the administration, which has always insisted all military, economic and political matters in Iraq remain under U.S. control.

The Times said by allowing the U.N. more authority, the U.S. might win the support of the Security Council for a new mandate authorizing the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq.

The Pentagon has historically opposed any arrangement in which its troops were not under U.S. control.
