Ballpark financing bill passes in Oregon

SALEM, Ore., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski indicated late Monday he would sign a financing bill for a new stadium aimed at luring Major League Baseball to Portland.

The much-debate bill was passed Monday by the state Legislature and goes to Kulongoski's desk for his signature.

The measure provides $150 million for the project, about half of its estimated total price tag. The governor said it was now up to Portland to "step up to the plate with their share of the cost."

Passage of the bill should give Portland boost in its campaign to bring the Montreal Expos or another franchise to Oregon. The Washington, D.C. area still has its eye on the Expos, but is also struggling to get a stadium project off the ground in either the District or Northern Virginia.
