Russian media baron arrested in Greece

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A Russian media baron has been arrested in Greece on an international fraud warrant.

Vladimir Gusinsky was detained at Athens airport Saturday after arriving from Israel, where he had been living in self-imposed exile, the BBC reported.

Russia has charged Gusinsky with fraud worth $250 million, the Greek authorities said.

The former owner of the NTV television channel and other media, moved to Israel from Spain in April 2001 after a Spanish court refused to extradite him to Moscow on an earlier fraud warrant.

Gusinsky enjoyed great power and influence under the presidency of Boris Yeltsin but rapidly fell out of favor when Vladimir Putin came to power in late 1999, the BBC said.

His media outlets, renowned for freely reporting sensitive stories, were taken over by pro-Kremlin interests.

Another Russian tycoon, Boris Berezovsky, is in Britain battling a Russian request for his extradition on similar charges.
