U.S. considers Iraq course change at U.N.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said Wednesday night Washington was considering another U.N. Security Council resolution on Iraq.

"We don't have a specific proposal to put on the table at the moment," he told reporters following a session of the council in which the panel formally announced determination to continue helping Iraq rebuild.

However, it was speculated a measure would be sought to endorse a U.N.-sanctioned multinational force for Iraq. Both Britain and the United States were set to report Thursday to the council on their security measures in Iraq.

It was announced Wednesday evening that U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell had requested, and been granted, a meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. They were to meet (at 9 a.m. EDT) Thursday.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw also was flying to New York Thursday and was to meet with Annan (at 9 a.m. EDT) Friday on Iraq.
