Hamburg al-Qaida trial opens

HAMBURG, Germany, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A 30-year-old Moroccan went on trial Thursday in Hamburg, Germany, accused of involvement in the planning of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Abdelghani Mzoudi, is the second person to be tried in Germany in connection with the attacks on the United States, the BBC reported Thursday.

He was arrested in Hamburg last October, and is charged with 3,066 counts of aiding and abetting murder and membership in al-Qaida.

The prosecution case will focus on Mzoudi's friendship with Mohammed Atta, the presumed ringleader of the hijackers, and the other members of the Hamburg cell.

Mzoudi is alleged to have arranged bank transfers for the members of the Hamburg cell and it is claimed he attended an al-Qaida training camp in Afghanistan.

But defense lawyers will argue while their client knew Mohammed Atta and the other hijackers, he knew nothing about the plot to attack the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
