French hurdle in Lockerbie deal

PARIS, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- France has indicated that it will seek an award of billions of dollars more for an airplane bombing that killed 170 people in Niger in 1989.

The move follows by one day a reported multi-billion dollar settlement to the families of the victims of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people in 1988.

France has indicated it will push for a settlement this week equal to that awarded to victims of the Lockerbie bombing.

A French UTA airliner was blown up over Niger in 1989 and Libya already has paid $34.3 million in compensation but made no admission of guilt.

The compensation demand could mean Paris might use its veto power at the U.N. Security Council to stop the expected lifting of sanctions on Libya, the BBC said.
