Bush remains aloof on California recall

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- President Bush said Wednesday the California recall election is "a fascinating political drama," but one he has no intention of involving himself in.

The president will be in California Thursday and Friday to raise money for his re-election. He told reporters at his Texas ranch he thinks Arnold Schwarzenegger would be a "good governor" but insisted he was primarily a spectator.

"I'm most interested in seeing how the process evolves," Bush said. "It's a fascinating political drama."

Schwarzenegger this week shuffled his campaign team, bringing in some former top aides to Gov. Pete Wilson.

Gov. Gray Davis has thus far not taken any personal shots at Schwarzenegger, however, Arnold's fellow Republican, Bill Simon, has been questioning the actor's ability to run a state as large as California.

In the meantime, the Game Show Network said it would stage a televised debate among some of the recall's "lesser" candidates shortly before the election.
