Cruise line sues propulsion pod maker

MIAMI, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Celebrity Cruises filed a $300 million lawsuit Thursday against Rolls-Royce and Alston Power Conversion, the makers of a ship pod-propulsion system.

The lawsuit charges the pods failed repeatedly, resulting in several canceled or interrupted cruises. Celebrity said the recurring failures cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.

Celebrity also claims Rolls Royce and Alstom Power Conversion misrepresented their product, called the Mermaid Propulsion System. The lawsuit claims the pods were "defectively designed" and "deceptively and fraudulently marketed."

Celebrity Cruises President Jack Williams said: "Guests and travel agents should continue to have full confidence in the Celebrity brand.

"We have modified the more troublesome components, and we are working on a permanent solution. In the meantime, guests should know that any cruise we have to cancel, as a result of any issue with these pods, we will back with a full refund and a free cruise."
