NAACP returns to S. Florida

MIAMI, July 11 (UPI) -- Twelve-thousand delegates from the NAACP will be coming to the Miami Beach Convention Center beginning Saturday for the civil rights group's annual convention.

The last time the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People came to Miami Beach was 1980, weeks after the acquittal of four Dade police officers accused of beating a black man to death. The decision led to riots in Overtown and Liberty City.

The Miami Herald said tensions also seethed over the decision to dismiss a black Miami-Dade public schools superintendent who had been indicted on charges of making personal purchases with school system funds.
