Bush visits Ugandan AIDS clinic

KAMPALA, Uganda, July 11 (UPI) -- President Bush arrived in the Ugandan capital Friday to speak with AIDS patients.

Uganda is the only African country which has successfully managed to reverse the tide of AIDS infections, the BBC reported.

During his four-hour stopover, Bush will visited an AIDS support organization and held talks with the country's President Yoweri Museveni.

He is also due to meet AIDS sufferers who will ask him about better access to life-saving, anti-retroviral drugs.

Most of the Ugandans who need the drugs cannot afford to pay for them, even with the new generic drugs available on the market.

Uganda has successfully fought AIDS with an aggressive public information campaign after the epidemic slashed life expectancy from 48 years to 38 during the 1990s.

In the early 1990s, the rate of HIV infection in some urban areas was as high as 30 percent but today is just 6 percent.
