The Roman Catholic priest was identified as Father George Ibrahim. He was shot dead sometime after midnight in Renala Khord, a small town near Okara, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of Islamabad.

Gunmen broke into his home, police said. Ibrahim had received several death threats, according to an All Pakistan Minorities Alliance official. The threats were apparently linked to longstanding tensions revolving around a school that had been returned to the Roman Catholic Church by the provincial government.

Religious violence is a recurring problem, especially in rural areas outside the influence of the central government.
