Mayors honor the late Maynard Jackson

ATLANTA, June 26 (UPI) -- A delegation of U.S. mayors will be in Atlanta Friday and Saturday to honor and pay respects to the late former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson.

Jackson, who passed away earlier this week, had a long history of participation and leadership with the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

He was elected the first black mayor of Atlanta and served two terms from 1973-1982. He was elected again for an unprecedented third term from 1990-1994.

He continued to support and participate in strengthening the conference after he left office in 1994.

The president of the conference, Hempstead, N.Y., Mayor James Garner said, "Mayor Jackson was not only a distinguished leader in his community, but a leader and mentor for other mayors nationwide."
