U.N. welcomes report Suu Kyi not hurt

UNITED NATIONS, June 10 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Tuesday welcomed the report Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is uninjured and in good spirits.

Annan's special envoy to Myanmar, Razali Ismail, met with her shortly before he left the capital of Yangon earlier Tuesday winding up his five-day mission to Myanmar, said Annan's spokesman, Fred Eckhard.

The spokesman said Annan gave Razali "specific instructions" to see the opposition leader who had been held incommunicado under "protective custody" since violent clashes that took place between her supporters and pro-government protesters in northern Myanmar May 30.

"However," Eckhard said, "the secretary-general remains seriously concerned about the fact that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior leaders of the National League for Democracy are still denied freedom of movement. He, once again, strongly urges the Government of Myanmar to release her and other NLD leaders from the continued detention immediately and begin a dialogue aimed at national reconciliation without further delay."
