Rebels make second stab at Monrovia

MONROVIA, Liberia, June 8 (UPI) -- Bodies litter streets of Monrovia's western suburbs Sunday as fighting resumed between government forces and rebels making a second foray into the capital.

The confused situation is costing lives, according to IRINnews.Org, whose correspondent counted 113 bodies on the main avenue north from the capital.

Weapons could be heard firing Sunday night. The government claims to have captured 80 rebels as it recaptured suburban areas the rebels held briefly.

Liberian President Charles Taylor returned from peace talks with some of the rebels last week after a coup attempt in his absence failed.

A couple of thousand citizens of the capital have sought refuge in a sport stadium, others in a school. Some have petitioned the U.S. embassy for sanctuary.

Meanwhile foreign aid workers are preparing to evacuate, leaving about 200,000 refugees from previous fighting in eight camps around the capital.
