EVENT: INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS holds a Book Release for "The Korean Diaspora in the World Economy." The next year marks the hundredth anniversary of Korean migration into the United States. That migration began in 1903 with the movement of Korean workers into sugar plantations in Hawaii. It is estimated that almost 2 million Koreans now live and work in the United States. A total of about 6 million Koreans, close to 10 percent of the current population of the Korean peninsula, now live outside the peninsula.
AGENDA: To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Korean immigration into the United States and to analyze the little-noticed Korean diaspora's past and potential future economic impact, the OKF and the Institute held a major conference in Seoul in October 2002 and are now releasing this volume.
