WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A hearing is to continue on Wednesday into whether one of the two Washington-area sniper suspects should be tried as an adult.
The Washington Post reports that prosecutors on Tuesday called 10 witnesses in an effort to persuade Judge Charles J. Maxfield of the Fairfax County, Va., Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to send capital murder charges in Franklin's slaying to adult court, where John Lee Malvo could face the death penalty.
Police and federal agents "offered detailed descriptions of crime scenes and ballistic evidence in an effort to tie Malvo, 17, to Washington area sniper attacks that left 10 people dead," the newspaper said. And Commonwealth's Attorney Robert F. Horan began to present evidence from four of the 13 attacks.
At two of these attacks, the sniper suspects allegedly left notes. According to the Post, Horan told the court that Malvo and John Allen Muhammad, 42, tried -- through letters left at the shooting scenes and phone calls to police -- to extort $10 million from the government.
Malvo and Muhammad are charged in 13 shootings -- 10 fatal -- in the Washington area sniper attacks.
Another 10 witnesses are to testify Wednesday, the Post says.
