Thrashers sign Uwe Krupp

ATLANTA, July 19 (UPI) -- Injured free agent defenseman Uwe Krupp, who has won two Stanley Cups in his career, signed with the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday.

Krupp, 37, made $4.1 million last season, when he was a peripheral member of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. He played just eight games during the season and appeared in two playoff games.

Krupp is a 15-year veteran who has 69 goals and 212 assists in 725 games with Buffalo, the New York Islanders, Quebec/Colorado and Detroit. He scored the series-clinching goal in triple overtime of Game Four of the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals, giving Colorado its first championship.

"Uwe is a proven veteran who adds a lot of size and experience to our defense," Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said. "With his ability and on-ice presence, he will immediately strengthen our lineup."

Krupp has missed virtually the last three seasons due to injury. After signing with Detroit in 1999, he did not play at all in the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 campaigns.

The 6-6, 235-pound Krupp played for Germany in the 1998 Olympics. He made the NHL All-Star team in 1991 with Buffalo and 1999 with Detroit, missing the latter game due to injury.
